FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“To the Light” – the Chippewa Valley Symphony Orchestra announces its sweeping and soul-searching May concert, featuring Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection.
_____________________________________________________________________________

EAU CLAIRE (April 25, 2012) – The Chippewa Valley Symphony Orchestra presents “To the Light” on Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Haas Fine Arts Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.

Conducted by Symphony Maestro Nobuyoshi Yasuda (Nobu), Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2, Resurrection, burns with ecstasy and yearning while powered by a thunderous cast of nearly 200 instrumentalists, chorus members and soloists. A symphony so massive in scope demands its own spotlight and will deliver an unforgettable concert-going experience. “We are very excited to perform one of the mightiest symphonies ever written” says Nobu.

“To the Light” will also showcase Karin Wolverton and Nicole Warner, as well as the Chippewa Valley Festival Chorus. Described by Opera News as “a young soprano to watch, having a lovely warm tone, easy agility and winning musicality”, Karin Wolverton has performed with such organizations as the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Opera and the Pittsburgh Opera. International mezzo-soprano Nicole Warner is best known for the “chocolate richness” of her voice and the unforgettable emotional engagement she shares with the audience. “I am very proud that our community is able to produce such a huge project. Please come to join us to feel the power of live performance!” says Nobu.

Prior to “To the Light”, the CVSO will present a free pre-concert talk on Mahler Symphony No. 2, led by WPR Music Director Cheryl Dring, in the Phillips Recital Hall on the UWEC Campus at 6:30pm.

Tickets will be sold at the door or online at www.cvsymphony.org. Tickets are $23 for adults, $21 for seniors and just $5 for students under 25. How Savvy Are You?

The Savvy Musician by David CutlerJust like your instrument, The Savvy Musician: Building a Career, Earning a Living & Making a Difference is a tool for your toolbox. And if there's one thing I've seen that more musicians need, it's business skills.

In college and grad school, no one pulled me aside and said, "Hey, did you know that you'll be an entrepreneur for the rest of your life and everything that goes into your career you'll have to generate yourself?" If they had, well, we'd all be reading a different blog entry right now.

Over the years I've created several lists of skills every performer needs from "time management/scheduling" to "flexibility, sightreading, networking, branding" and the like. Thankfully Dorothy Wu, Co-Founder of NotesontheRoad.com, told me about David Cutler's book

The Savvy Musician: Building a Career, Earning a Living & Making a Difference. I've already implemented ideas from this book and as I can personally attest to, it's an extremely valuable tool for your toolbox!

Stay tuned for my next tip for Musical Entrepreneurship Success!

Both Conn and Warner will be performing Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra on September 19, 2010.

The Bel Canto Regional Artists Competition was established to encourage and support singers who reside in or originate from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio.  Previous winners of the Competition have gone on to sing on nationally recognized stages throughout the United States and Europe, including the Metropolitan Opera.
