Gioacchino Rossini (pictured above) wrote the Petite Messe Solennelle (Small solemn mass) in 1863 as a salon piece for two pianos and harmonium, calling for only 12 singers; the soloists should sing the chorus parts and the solos. Rossini orchestrated the piece from 1866-1867 and the orchestrated version was performed for the first time in 1869 with full orchestra, chorus, and soloists. Rossini never heard it orchestrated; he died in 1868. (Source)
